FAQs

Who can have acupuncture?

Anyone can benefit from acupuncture. Young or old, male or female, acupuncture treats each person individually. Many people come for acupuncture for a specific problem, others choose acupuncture to maintain health or simply to improve their feeling of well-being. Acupuncture can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine as well as other complimentary therapies.

Can acupuncture be used during pregnancy?

Yes, although there are certain acupuncture points that are contraindicated during pregnancy. It is important to state if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.

How frequently will I be treated?

How often you come for treatment depends on the condition being treated. Usually patients start off having weekly treatments and as the condition improves, the treatment may take place every two weeks and reduce to every three or four weeks with further improvement. An acute condition, may benefit initially from treatment sessions daily or every other day. Preventative treatments are usually given when patients have recovered from an illness and wish to continue to stay healthy.

How many treatments will I need?

The length of time it takes to get better differs between patients. An acute condition can often be cleared in one to five treatments, but chronic problems usually take longer and may need treating for several months.

What are the needles like?

Acupuncture needles are very fine, solid, stainless steel with a copper coiled handle. The length of the needles vary according to which area of the body needs to be treated.

Do the needles hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very fine and have a very sharp point so they can be inserted painlessly, most people don’t feel them being inserted. It is usual to feel a mild tingling or aching sensation during treatment, this is known as Di Qi and is not unpleasant.

How are the needles sterilised?

Acupuncture practitioners always use single use pre-sterilised disposable needles. Each needle is disposed of in a sharps box after use. This ensures that no infection can be transmitted between patients. Each patient is treated with the highest standard of care and cleanliness.

How many needles are used at each treatment?

The number varies according to the condition, but generally six to twelve needles are used per treatment. For the treatment of musculo-skeletal conditions, a larger number of needles may sometimes be used in a localised area to move the obstructed Qi and to free the joint.

How deep do the needles go?

The depth of insertion varies according to the size of the patient and the area being treated. Most commonly needles are inserted between 6 - 13 mm. Needles can be inserted deeper in fleshy areas and only very shallowly on non-fleshy areas such as the toe. The depth of the needle is not associated with the amount of sensation felt. Some points that are needled shallowly can create more sensation than ones where the needle is inserted more deeply.

Will the needles make me bleed?

It is unusual for acupuncture needles to draw blood during a treatment because the needles are so fine they won’t normally pierce blood vessels. On occasions a small drop of blood is drawn and a tiny bruise can appear, this is nothing to worry about.

How will I feel after treatment?

Patients usually feel deeply relaxed. Some patients experience immediate improvement in their condition after treatment, others can take longer to notice changes.

Are there any side effects?

There are virtually no adverse side effects to acupuncture. After treatment some patients can feel dizzy or sleepy but this soon passes. Occasionally a small bruise can appear at a needle site.

Why does the acupuncture practitioner feel my pulse and check my tongue?

Feeling the pulse and observing the tongue are sophisticated methods of diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which enable the practitioner to assess the flow of Qi, blood, and body fluids within the entire body.

How is my privacy protected?

As a member of the ATCM and the FHT I am bound by both organisations Code of Professional Conduct. In accordance with the code all information concerning patients are kept entirely confidential between the practitioner and the patient concerned and handled and stored in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

I first got in touch with Sarah in November 2016 following a recommendation from a friend after being diagnosed with a metabolic disorder. Conventional treatment was leaving me feeling pretty awful and so I was looking for something to get my body back on track and work alongside the medicines which I'd been prescribed but unfortunately wasn't responding to.
Sarah was the first person treating me to ask me how I was feeling. She made me feel like a person, not a condition and as such looked over my entire lifestyle to find ways that I could help heal myself alongside the treatments that she gave which helped me feel like I was taking some control back.
After four treatments with Sarah, I found out that I was pregnant and earlier this week I gave birth to a beautiful little girl which would not have been possible prior to the acupuncture treatments due to the effects of my metabolic disorder.
I can neither thank or recommend Sarah enough

My treatment with Sarah is quite literally lifesaving. Having my weekly sessions of acupuncture gives me pain relief, calming and help with relaxation that is very hard for me to attain due to living with Fibromyalgia and other debilitating conditions. Sarah is very professional with a vast knowledge of what she does, and so compassionate and empathetic consistently with every treatment which enhances the overall experience of her therapy. I intend to continue my weekly appointments with her for the rest of my life if possible. Thank you so much x

Last week I required an emergency appointment with an acupuncturist having relapsed with an old injury. I found First Point Acupuncture online. Having answered my phone call straight away Sarah introduced herself and arranged an emergency appointment for me for the same day.
That evening I met Sarah in person at her clinic; she was warm, polite, kind and supportive. The clinic was clean and well presented. Sarah then completed an in depth assessment of my injury as well as a holistic review of my life. Following this Sarah began the acupuncture where she aimed to alleviate not only the symptoms of my injury but the stresses of my life too.
The acupuncture was amazing, I fell asleep during the treatment and my back pain instantly improved. That night, when I arrived home, I went straight to bed and had an uninterrupted night's sleep. The first in many weeks.
I strongly recommend Sarah and her approach to acupuncture. I will be returning for follow up appointments with confidence.

I first used First Point Acupuncture to treat my sciatica in June 2017. I had never used acupuncture before and admit I was skeptical at first but Sarah has really helped me and I have also found out that she can treat so much more. Sarah is very professional but extremely friendly and helpful too. I recently had an accident and had my foot in plaster but she was happy to continue to treat me at home for which I am really grateful. I would highly recommend Sarah and will continue to use First Point Acupuncture as it is benefiting me so much.

I first started going to Sarah with my dad who has Parkinson's disease, but when I found out acupuncture can help my sciatic back I thought I would give it a try, with my first treatment I was pain free and I couldn’t believe it I was so happy and as I am going through the menopause acupuncture is helping me through it and with going on a regular basis it helps keeps me pain free. Sarah is more than happy to accommodate if I have needed to change my appointment because of work commitments. Sarah is very friendly and is more then happy to offer help and advice and I would recommend acupuncture to anyone who is in need of some relief.

Being a sceptic, I decided to give First Point Acupuncture a try for an over all well being session. Suffering from profuse sweating and a feeling of sluggishness Sarah advised on the treatment I received. The clinic is superb and the quality of treatment was second to non. Sarah's expertise and friendly knowledgeable manner put me at ease from the start. I left the clinic with a complete change of view on alternative medicine. Feeling calm and relaxed, better than I have in a long time, to my amazement also no sweating all day! I highly recommend
First Point Acupuncture.
